The Recycling Industry

GPMA was the first to initiate commercial plastic waste recycling in Ghana in the year 2006. The most popular one in Ghana is the collection and sale of empty water sachet plastic waste business.

Over the past 15 years, there have been an impressive increase in the amount of both flexible and rigid plastics recycling. We have seen many people engaged in collection, washing and transportation of plastic waste to recycling plants, creating new opportunities for jobs whilst making efforts to clean the environment of plastic waste. There are 99 SME’s and 8 Medium to Large Scale well-established companies and 27 Cottage Industries in plastic recycling doing over 241,530 metric tons of flexible and rigid plastics annually. PET Resin consumption or Preform production as at June 2021 stood at 7,110 metric tons per month or 85,363 metric tons annually, this excludes imports of finished plastic packaging. PET waste recycling is rising significantly, mostly in the process of collection, washing, heat treatment and flaking for exports. Currently, plastic waste purchase amounts to Ghs 298.596 mn i.e. $ 48.95 mn or Euro 41.471 mn annually (exchange rate as at 24/8/2021.
